Freqently Asked Questions

Heel Pain Video F.A.Q.

How successful are these exercises?
You can be one of the 98% of the people who have STOPPED their heel pain with these exercises.. And best of all, you'll be treating the underlying problems instead of finding temporary relief.

How long will this program take to work?
You'll probably have a noticeable difference within a week to 2 weeks. Most patients report that their heel pain is COMPLETELY gone within 2 months. If extreme symptoms have been present for a long time, FULL recovery can take up to 6 months. While this might seem like a long time, this program is the only way to actually eliminate the underlying cause of your heel pain.

Is it possible that I have tried this treatment already?
Probably not at the right intervals and not for the right time period.  My video is very specific.  I've spent much of my professional life perfecting the technique, and over 5000 people have benefited from it.

Why wasn't this treatment given to me by my health care provider?
Several reasons. Most health care providers are not well acquainted with this treatment in the refined format that I present it.

But even when a physician understands and adopts this form of treatment, it takes a lot of their office time to really help the patient see HOW it works. People aren't robots--you can't just plug a set of instructions in and assume people will follow them. If the patients don't understand what's going on with their bodies, they often won't complete the required treatment.

In short -- if you don't understand it, you won't do it.

So most of the time, physicians and patients alike are inclined to want “widgets” (devices like orthotics, heel cushions or cups, or braces) and quick fixes (procedures like injections, oral medications, or surgery). In today's world it's rare for an orthopedic surgeon or health care provider to give information only, especially when it means patients have to get involved in their own care and that the treatment may take time to relieve the pain.

Will I need any extra equipment that I would need to purchase?
No, there is no special equipment needed. This exercise program can be done anywhere, at anytime…even at work.  As a matter of fact, it might not even look like you're doing an exercise to observers.

How involved are these exercises?
The exercises are very simple, and that is really one of the most important features of this program. This is how I purposely developed it because the simpler it is, the more people will follow it. And the more people who follow it, the more people will find themselves pain free.   I want to help you get rid of the pain.  Therefore I've developed the system to make it easy for you.

I have already done physical therapy. What makes the exercises in this DVD different?
This treatment is somewhat similar to physical therapy...but I focus it one one thing only -- healing your problem.  I skip all the 'extra' modes of treatment. Simple and targeted exercises yield the best result.  The rest tend to make the routine longer, more tiring, and even more painful than they need to be.

With my system, you will spend less than 10 minutes a day healing your pain.

Will the exercises help me if I have already had surgery and failed?
The program will be just as effective as long as no new problems have resulted from the surgery and your pain is similar to the pain you had prior to the surgery. Any problems resulting from the surgery, such as nerve damage, will not be addressed by this program.

Why is this presented in a video format?
They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  In this case, a video is worth a thousand pictures.  It's important for you to fully understand what you're trying to accomplish with the exercises.  That means seeing the exercises demonstrated, and seeing a good illustration of what's happening to your muscles and tendons when you do the exercises.

The video is an excellent, inexpensive way to present this information.   Once you see it, you'll know exactly why it works, and you'll find yourself happy and enthusiastic about completing the treatment.

How long is the video?
The video, originally produced in 1995, runs 14 minutes. Because there have been two revisions to the original, Dr. Amis provides a nine-minute Q&A section that will give you all the information you need.

So just 23 minutes gives you a complete understanding of why you're feeling pain, what you can do about it, and why the exercises work.  Once you've watched it, you'll be on your way to a complete recovery of serious heel pain.

Treatment Method
Approximate Costs
The approximate costs refers to the total cost of the particular treatment or device. Your health insurance may or may not cover a particular treatment modality, however there is almost always “out of pocket” expense to you.
Effective?
All of these treatments are legitimate and are used routinely. However most of them are at best partially effective at improving the pain, and they are not aimed at the actual cause of your pain. Only the Heel Pain Video addresses the true source of your pain.
Orthotics
Orthotics, first of all, are expensive and are usually not covered by health insurance. While orthotics may infrequently give some pain relief, they will never solve you heel pain at its root cause. Never. Often orthotics can be painful in their own right and, as a result, are generally not well accepted by the patient.
$300-400 Sometimes
Night Splints
Night splints at best reduce the heel pain that occurs first arising put of bed in the morning. Nothing more! Night splints do not help you solve your problem. Night splints comprise a large medical industry based on nothing.
$50-100 Rarely
Cortisone Shots
A cortisone shot in the heel area can be very beneficial in treating your pain, but it is clearly temporary, and does not in any way treat the underlying cause of your heel pain. While infrequent, significant complications can occur following this injection including heel fat pad atrophy, infection, and plantar fascial rupture.
$120 Temporary
Physical Therapy
Generally speaking physical therapy (PT) is most often an expensive waste of time when treating heel pain. PT is time consuming and always inundates the patient with too many exercises that are not directed at the real cause of your problem.
$1000s Rarely
Immobilization
Of course immobilization will make your heel pain better while you’re in the boot, but as soon as you come out your pain almost always returns. Immobilization definitely does not treat the cause of your heel pain. And casts and walking boots aren’t cheap.
$25-300 No
Surgery
Surgery is clearly a last resort and is rarely indicated for the treatment of plantar fasciitis. Surgery regardless of insurance coverage will cost you out of pocket expenses and may cause serious very costly complications that are usually permanent. Surgery does not treat the underlying cause and is certainly not a quick fix.

"Dr. Amis, At first I was 'disappointed' that the exercise was one on the Mayo Clinic site - that hadn't done much to improve my condition. However, your explanation of the mechanics of the problem made a lot of sense.

To backtrack somewhat, I always went barefoot and the pain developed a year ago at which time I switched to wearing Adidas all the time, then progressed to arch support inserts and just lately, as the pain was getting progressively worse, to a very expensive support. I also realized that Mayo did not explain the exercise well at all. So I did not really do it. Once I saw the video and understood the why and how, I started the program immediately. I immediately felt a lessening of the pain.

The improvements are continuing in a remarkable way. I've had the pain for so long that now I'm not sure what I'll do when it's gone completely. But right now I'm very happy to report that in the brief span of 3 days, that it's only at the end of the day that I cringe when I walk, and that is after sitting down for awhile. I'm confident that as I continue the program that the plantar fascia will actually heal completely over the 3-4 months that you speak of.

However, the pain relief is amazing even now and I'm confident that I will be able to continue to care for the children in my home day care. Thank you for making the video. I will send another progress report in a month or so."
